July 4th

What July 4th means to me, "It's hot, and I'm wondering if I should go to the Quapaw powwow, It's in the northeast corner of Oklahoma.  Just about 5 miles and a person can be in Kansas or Missouri."

"I haven't been to the powwow in a few years, I don't see myself going."

"I'm going to get some firecrackers, and my family and hangout."

To be honest, It's just another day to me, It wasn't my forefathers that sign that paper in 1776, It means nothing to me, my people have always been independent.

Independence Day

On July 4th of 1776, the declaration of independence was adopted. This was to initiate self determination for the colonies. Oddly enough the colonial Americans did not enjoy being governed by a government that they felt neither represented or respected them.

ANOTHER DAY WITHOUT FREEDOM

July 4th is the national holiday commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, hence the name independence day.

For the past 5 years the Osage Nation, located in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, a place I have personally grown to adore, has held the National Indian Taco Championships. I have known of the contest for the past 3 years I believe and have even known of a friend, a fellow Haskell student to be a judge.I am, although unaware of how the turn out for the actual event is, I have yet to hear of how many compete in this contest and where do the contestants come from.

Contest For Indian Tacos

Pawhuska, Oklahoma is the site for a contest that might intrigue a few crafters of a dish referred to as an Indian Taco. The event is called the National Indian Taco Championships and the last one held was on May 16, 2009. Categories include the traditional Indian taco, annother is the dessert taco, and the last is one that includes both the traditional and dessert tacos.

National Indian Taco Championship

On May 16, 2009 the Osage Nation held their 5th Annual National Indian Taco Championship in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The categories were classic or traditional Indian taco and "dessert" Indian taco. The classic or traditional category had to include frybread, meat, lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese, sour cream, and green chilis were optional. There were no requirement or restrictions for the "dessert" category other than it had to include frybread. The prizes included $1500 for 1st, $1000 for 2nd, and $500 for 3rd.

JUDGING INDIAN TACOS

The Osage nation is hosting a Indian Taco Making Contest in Pawhuska OK.  I question the judgment over modern day indian tacos.  Yes, indian tacos are extremely popular in present day indian country, but how traditional are they?  The ingredients, not traditional, the cooking materials, not traditional.  I am from the Skokomish Tribe in western washington.  My people have had indian tacos since the before contact.  Traditionally our fry bread was made from dried sword fern as flour and water then fried in bear fat over the fire on a large stone.  We would top them with deer, elk

NOT TO BE TRUSTED

South Carolina Gov.  Mark Sanford said, he "crossed lines" with a handful of other women during 20 years of marriage, but not as far as he did with his mistress.

"There were a handful of instances wherein I crossed the lines I shouldn't have crossed as a married man, but never crossed the ultimate line," he said.

Sanford insisted hes relationship with Maria Belen Chapur, whom he met at an open air dance spot in Uruguay eight years ago, was more than just sex.

A New Beginning

Haskell Indian Nations for me, is a place to start over everyone is working towards a common goal.  Everyone is trying to a degree to better their lives.  No one knows your past are or where you came from, they can only take you as you are.  This is A NEW BEGINNING.

Bernie "Made-Off" With Nothing Except Jail Time

On Monday, June 29, 2009, Federal District Judge Denny Chin sentenced Bernard L. Madoff to 150 years in prison (the maximum for his crimes), ending the trial to what some call the longest, largest and most widespread Ponzi scheme in history. Judge Chin noted that Madoff's sentencing should be symbolic of the pain and suffering he brought to his many victims.

Just A Movie????

The new movie "Transformers" premiered this past weekend and i still haven't had a chance to go and see it.  But i think i would like to see the second movie because i did enjoy the last one.  Some great looking actors and talented to be able to make a movie that commands alot of action.  The last movie was great so i can just imagine what this next one is like.  So far i've heard good things and then there are those ones who didn't like it and had to say negative things about it.  People it's a "movie" about robots and entertaintainment for all.

150 years for madoff

The sentence went far beyond the 12 years suggested by Madoff’s lawyers and virtually guaranteed that, at age 71, the financier-turned-felon would die while imprisoned.

Not So Thriller Ending for the King of Pop

Jackson's passing sent my mind spinning in a blur back to about 1984-85.

Let Michael Be

Michael Jackson wasn't born into stardom but had to work many long years to become the "King of Pop" and he made many good and bad choices but he's human.  Like the rest of us he made mistakes and why should he be remembered for them?  Let his family bury him, so what difference does it make if he died from drugs, if that's the way he died?  There are so many reasons why he took drugs for whatever ailed him so let it go let him be in peace.  Remember he's not suffering any longer.  Why are people so interested in the way in died?  I'll remember him for the music he made over th

Jackson's Music Untarnished By Wild Behavior

Michael Jackson's death stirred many thoughts Thursday, including questions about whether his outrageous behavior - including trying to erase his African American features - has forever tainted his music. At least for this listener, the answer is no.

Free Laptops?? Free Money?

Like i mentioned before i am new to this world and to be able to blog and receive gifts for it, well it may intrigue me.  NOT i don't think there is anything for free.  But if the government wants to be able to take control of the blogging well more power to them.  They have their hands in everything.  i don't think they would be able to control all the blogs that i've seen so far and the ones i can just imagine that's out there so i'm not to sure about the FTC getting control or whatever it is they are trying to do with the blogs.  But that's just my opinion.

DO THEY NOT KNOW WE ARE HERE?

Prayer for Donation

Today the Haskell community gathered in reverence around the firepit to pray for the new donation given to the Haskell Cultural Center. I learned the item was hancuffs that were used on children here at Haskell. Tears burst from my eyes, I could feel the pain.

FTC: Friend? or Foe?

It is being said that companies are paying people to write positive blogs about their products. Alledgedly they recieve payments such as free laptops, trips to Europe, and large sums of money among other gifts. The FTC (Federal Trade Comission) wants to set down rules and guidelines for bloggers in order to stop these false advertisements. This is great for the consumers that take these blogs seriously, but technically isn't it violating "freedom of speech"? And just a side note to remember, the commercials on T.V have paid actors as well. Something to think about.

Money to be made and censorship on new levels...

As the blogging world grows at an ever rapid pace, light has been shed on Americas "new past time" that there may need to be a "code of ethics" of sort for this type of civil journalism. It appears to have become such a threat to consumers that the Federal Trade Commission is beginning to step in.

Government to monitor Bloggers

Government to monitor BloggersThe Federal Trade Commission to monitor consumer review blogs.  This is just the first step to monitor bloggers, where there is a lot of people doing something for free in this case blog, then there is money to be made and a tax to be put on it.  Oh they say it is for any false claims or failure to disclose conflicts of interest and they may be

Free Stuff for Product-Hyping Bloggers?

In a recent report by the Associated Press, the Federal Trade Commission is slated to approve new guidelines that would clarify that they can go after bloggers who accept free gifts for posting endorsing blogs for products from companies who seek to benefit from the positive blogs. In some cases, bloggers have accepted free laptops, trips to Europe, gift cards, and even thousands of dollars (and I'm sure a lot more) in exchange for hyping a product from a company.

Human Interest Profile:

I officially started my Human Interest Profile for class today.  I decided to write about Rob Parker-Ortley.  He is a native kid that is a part of the Lawrence Youth Ensamble.  His group did a play over the weekend. I decided I liked his ambition and his ease in front of a crowd.  Today I did a phone interview with Rachael Perry, one of the counselors in charge of the Youth Center Ensemble. On Thursday I will do the actual interview with Rob and his mother. Cant wait. Pretty sure this assignment is going to be handed in late :(

The Many hats a Haskell students wears...

As I begin my journey into the "blogosphere", which is somewhat daunting, I begin so with my head held high. Is that even possible on the net? I am not one to shy away from a challenge, and this stint in blogging for my Feature Writing class is just that.

Introduction to the Blogging World.

I’m an in a class here at Haskell; called feature writing. Our teacher wants to introduce us to the world of blogging; the so-called "blogosphere". I have never blogged before so this is a new experience for me. Even though I am only 21, it seems that I am a little technologically behind.

Summertime's Cruel Effect of Laziness

I thought I had done an exceptional job with my first year here at Haskell Indian Nations University, and so at the latter parts of my spring 2009 semester I half-heatedly surmised that I would not relent on my efforts toward a degree by taking the summer off. As soon as the opportunity came up to apply for summer courses, I staked my claim in two courses. I was focused, determined, and red-hot from a very productive spring semester, and all I saw in the future was courses being slain left and right by my will to succeed, or just to be done.

Good Afternoon!

There is no blood in Hell.

There is no blood in Hell. This reality has changed me from the person I was to the person I am today.  The realization that the Lord Jesus dwells in my body impacts every decision I make.  Poor decisions that once tore my mind apart are forgiven through the cleansing Blood that was shed on the cross for all of us.  This Blood now flows in me teaching me to be mindful of th
