Romantic comedies are supposed to be funny, right?
"Made of Honor," which opened in theatres Friday, tries to be humorous and fails. More disappointing is that if you have seen the trailer, you have basically seen the movie.
The assembly line plot, through which many disappointing movies have gone, has all of the parts its title hints at. Good looking lead actor to steal our hearts? Love interest that is a friend under his nose the whole time? A sudden realization that he loves her when she becomes unavailable? Check, check and check. Still, it's missing big key components like humor and dramatic performances.
There was some uniqueness to a similar plot in "My Best Friend's Wedding." This movie is about the same - almost exactly, actually - minus Rupert Everett's wit, Julia Robert's scene stealing performance and Dermott Mulroney's true-to-life irresistibility.
The chemistry between our two lead actors, Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan, is lacking. When they look at each other, interact, or even exist in the same room they do not bring believability to their on-screen romance.
Monaghan plays an art curator who is sent to Scotland to pick up a collection. On her six-week trip she meets a dashing prince-like Scot who sweeps her off her feet.
While she is gone, her best friend played by Dempsey realizes that he loves her. Unbeknownst to him, his best friend has accepted her new love interest's proposal.
Of course, they don't wait the standard or appropriate time to get married; They get married the following week. Really believable.
Anyhow, take a stab at who gets the girl. Shocker, huh?
This movie was pretty horrible, unrealistic, cloaked in mediocre dialogue and so-so performances. It wasn't even funny. Overall, it was just a waste of my time.
This movie gets one reluctant frybread.
