My internship is nearing an end and I've been thinking about what I've learned while I've been here. I've learned a lot, but it hasn't been what I thought I'd learn.
Here's some examples:
- When covering pig wrestling, you will get covered in mud. Hours later, you'll still be picking it out of your hair.
- When a pig enters a mud wrestling pit, it will almost always immediately urinate or defecate. Sometimes both. This will then mix with the mud, which will surely end up all over you.
- Running really is addictive. It also helps with depression. And feelings of isolation and alienation. Oh, and fat. It helps with that, too.
- I am truly a journalist. When a boyfriend broke up with me, I took notes. Good thing it was over the phone, or that might have been kinda awkward for him.
I also learned how far I'm willing to bend my rules on ethics. And I learned how to fight when the boundaries I set up are crossed.
When I started my internship almost six weeks ago, I thought it would drag. I missed my life in Missoula and Denver and I was eager to return to it. I was wrong. Six weeks wasn't enough time. I'm going to miss South Dakota.
