A photo shootout by students attending the American Indian Journalism Institute captured a day in the life of Vermillion, S.D.
After delivering a 45-minute "Photo 101" lecture, AIJI instructor Val Hoeppner gave 19 reporting, editing and multimedia students two hours to practice their newfound skills in the town in southeastern South Dakota.
Three students won prizestheir choice of candy.
A photo of a smoking construction worker won the first-place award for copy editor Victoria Jackson-Dick. Christie Cooke and Melissa Morgan, also copy editors, received honorable mentions.
Vermillion is home to the University of South Dakota, where AIJI is held in the Al Neuharth Media Center.
