Baseball day

By Jacquelyne Taurianen

Baseball is not a sport that necessarily draws me in; I usually am able sit through an inning or two before I find myself dozing off or people watching for the next seven. So when I heard we would be going to baseball game all day June 10, I admit I was a little less than thrilled. I boarded the bus at 7:30 a.m. en route to Des Moines, Iowa with nothing more than hesitation.

At the lake and ballpark

Racing to the van on Saturday for the picnic at the lake near Yankton, S.D. was the highlight of the weekend. My skin took on a new rosey color after I forgot to apply sunscreen on shore.

Who wants a ride on the boat? I never turn down adventure. Suddenly, I realized I needed to swim out to the boat in the frigid water to grasp my hunger for the ride.

Road trip to baseball game

Driving through three states

By Charles Pulliam

Being from Alaska, I took advantage of how the highway is set up on a June 10 road trip to Des Moines, Iowa.

I’ve never been to any mid-west states until I arrived last week. On the drive Sunday, we went through a section of highway where South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa intersect.

The intersection allowed me to be in three states in one.

In my life-long quest to visit all the states in the U.S., I checked Nebraska off my list.

My first baseball game

My first professional baseball game was not for leisure. I actually didn’t see most of the game. I interviewed five families, asking how much they spend and how often they come.

I found out that most families watch an average of three baseball games per season. Many families see the games as a way of spending time with their families. The wives generally did not enjoy baseball, but they joined their husbands and children.
